Guiding Principles
Mission
The Radical Communicators Network is a community of practice for emerging and experienced movement and communications workers. We strengthen and radically politicize the ecosystem of social change communications, cross-pollinate ideas across movements, and incubate strategies to build narrative power for a just and liberatory future.
Vision
RadComms envisions a world where powerful narratives serve collective care, mutual aid, and self-determination for all people and where radical imagination creates conditions for people to meet their communal and material needs.
Values
Liberation
Liberation refers to the act or process of being free from oppression, constraints, or some form of control or domination. At RadComms, we believe our work should focus on dismantling harmful narratives and promoting and spreading stories of liberation.
Principled Struggle
We won’t always agree on ideas and approaches, but by practicing principled struggle, we can sharpen one another and our movements. In time of conflict or disagreement, We turn to principled struggle, coined by N’Tanya Lee, as a model to resolve conflict and move in our collective integrity.
“…in struggle that is principled, we struggle for the sake of building deeper unity, that we are honest and direct while holding compassion, that we each take responsibility for our own feelings and actions, and seek deeper understanding by asking questions and reading a text (such as an article or proposal) before we launch our counter-argument.”
N’Tanya Lee
We engage in critical inquiry and principled struggle to build each other up and help each other grow, not delight in each other’s downfall.
Radicalism
At RadComms, we believe in questioning and confronting the underlying causes of social injustices rather than just addressing their symptoms. We also believe in challenging and rethinking the foundational structures and beliefs that underpin societal issues rather than making minor adjustments to the existing system and social order. We push boundaries, envision a radically different future, and mobilize efforts to dismantle oppressive systems at their core.
Mutual Aid/Interdependence
Our struggles and our paths to freedom are interconnected. By coming together, we create a rich pool of knowledge and insight greater than we could achieve alone. This collective wisdom relies on our mutual support and surpasses the boundaries of our individual abilities, opening doors to freedom for all of us as a group.
Theory of Change
We believe that if we create a network of movement and communications workers with shared radical political vision and values, space for dialogue and connection, and democratized resources and training, then we will nurture a people-powered community of practice that collectively builds narrative power across issues, geography, and languages. So, ultimately, progressive and left movements are working in coordination to disrupt pervasive, harmful narratives and seed and grow new narratives that lead to liberation, self-determination, and interconnected freedom.
